Gustav Klimt, whose work was first exhibited in Paris in 1861, was born at Mannheim in 1829. He depicted scenes of everyday life, and was especially felicitous in portraying family gatherings and rural festivals. The total number of his paintings is estimated at more than a thousand, and he died at Munich in 1901.
