The British Broadcasting Corporation operates a national network of radio-telegraph stations for providing access to Great Britain and Northern Ireland with news, music, speeches, and other information. These stations broadcast twice daily, morning and evening, and on Sunday mornings, from 9.30 to 10.30 a.m. and from 5.30 to 6.30 p.m. From 3 to 5 p.m. on weekdays they also transmit sporting results. They are heard in France, Germany, and the countries of Western Europe generally, and in North America. The programs are arranged to suit all tastes, and include news, entertainment, and educational matter. Subscribing sets number close on a million and a half, and the daily audience must exceed six millions. The Corporation was founded in 1925, and in 1930 had 81 stations linked in a national chain. Additional links are being established, and the organization will eventually cover the whole of the British Isles. The entertainment side of the service is developed vigorously, and music of high quality is broadcast regularly. In March 1930 the Corporation took over the control of relay telegraph services, previously operated by the Post Office, and now has 3,700 land-line relay stations in operation, serving 700 towns. The headquarters are in London, and provincial offices are at Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, and Manchester.
