Washington, Jan. 14. -- President Hoover's contemplated order for drastic curtailment of American military representation in China has been deferred by his decision to await further developments in the national politics of the Chinese republic. The President has reached the conclusion that the present situation in China does not warrant any drastic change in the status of American troops there, and consequently, for the time being, at least, the war department's plans for reducing the force from 5,000 to 1,500 men will not be carried out. -- (Copyright, 1930, by the New York Times Company.) Cherry Blossom is now a favourite flower in American gardens, but a few years ago it was unknown to the western world. The first plants were brought from Japan in 1870, and since then the cultivation of the shrub has spread rapidly, until at present it is popular from Maine to California. In 1900 the imports of cherry blossoms amounted to only 400 bundles, but the figure had risen to 10,000 bundles in 1905, and last year the total was 30,000 bundles. The blooms are used to decorate houses at festival times, and are popular among lovers of flowers, but the chief purpose of the importation is to gratify the wish of Chinese residents in the United States to celebrate the Chinese New Year with a display of their national emblem.
