During the past week, Mr During the past week Mr Thomas Standard, Manager of the Standard Chartered Company, Ltd, apologised for the lower value of human capital which his firm was compelled to employ. ‘We are forced,’ he said, ‘to cut down our staff, and the men whom we must let go are the less efficient workers. The standard of work required from them was never high, and now it is made still lower. I am sorry for the poor fellows, but what can we do? They must just make way for better men. In times like these we cannot afford to pay for unskilled labour.’ In hard times like the present, unskilled labour must give place to skilled. The Standard Chartered Company, Ltd, have had to part with some of their least efficient employees, and to take on others more competent to do the work required of them.
