A unique affair which may well be described as a ‘cockroach party’ was given last night by General Z in his house in Simla. The guests, who numbered sixty, included all the notabilities of Simla society, and the proceedings, which lasted from eight o’clock till midnight, were of an exceptionally lively character. The feature of the evening was a competition in which the guests were required to pick up cockroaches from the floor with their fingers, and place them in small glass tubes. The prizes were awarded to the competitors who succeeded in collecting the greatest number of the insects in the shortest time. General Z himself won the first prize, a silver-mounted walking-stick; and the consolation prize, a box of insect powder, fell to the share of a recently-arrived young civilian. Supper was served at ten o’clock, and dancing brought the entertainment to a close about an hour later. The cockroach party was organized by way of a farew’ell to the season, and the guests departed in the small hours, voting the host an inimitable organizer of festivities.
