Modern headline: Three die in ‘horrific’ south Sydney vehicle crash after police welfare check

A ‘horrific’ accident occurred last night in south Sydney, when a motor-car crashed into a tramcar and three persons were killed. The dead are: A man, believed to be James Smith, of 24 Thomas Street; a woman, believed to be his wife, Mary; and a child, age uncertain, but apparently about five years old. The child was instantly killed, and the man and woman died in hospital a few minutes later. The driver of the car, Thomas Jones, of 16 Thomas Street, was removed to hospital suffering from severe shock and injuries to the head. Police are making an inquiry into the circumstances of the accident. — Sydney Morning Herald, 11 November 1930.

Note: The car, which was travelling at a high speed, struck the tramcar on the off-side, and was hurled against the kerb. Jones was flung clear of the wreckage, but the other occupants of the vehicle were pinned underneath. Medical aid was promptly summoned, and the injured man and woman were removed to hospital, where they expired almost immediately. The child was dead when picked up. Jones recovered consciousness, and was able to give his name and address to the police. The vehicle was demolished, and the tramcar badly damaged. — Sydney Morning Herald, 11 November 1930.
