Mr. Roger Stone, who has a private inquiry office in Sanctuary Street, Westminster, was yesterday convicted at the Old Bailey of supplying information to foreign governments likely to be useful in time of war. The prosecution was instituted by the Public Prosecutor, and Mr. Stone was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment. The main evidence against him was that of MajorGeneral von Schwartz, of the German General Staff, who admitted receiving from the prisoner particulars as to the strength and disposition of the British armed forces. The German officer further stated that Mr. Stone told him the information was for use in the event of an Anglo-German war, and added that similar data had been sent to Paris and Rome. The defence was a denial of any guilty knowledge, and an assertion that the facts had been communicated in the ordinary way of business. Mr. Stone, who has carried on the same kind of enterprise for many years, has hitherto borne an unblemished character, and the sentence passed upon him will be widely deplored.
