The Trust was founded in 1928, under the auspices of the Scottish Council for Social Service, to administer funds provided by private donors for rural social service in Argyllshire, and to acquire land for experimental purposes. The Trust acquired 1,500 acres in West Cowal, Argyllshire, to be used primarily for social, educational, and recreative purposes in an area which embraces 60,000 people. The land has been laid out for experimental work in forestry, agriculture, and fishing, and will be developed gradually as funds permit.
