Antonelli made his protest good by going ahead.
But it was Russell's first retirement from the Canadian Grand Prix, and he was cheered as he withdrew to the side-lines.
The two riders started riding together on lap 1, but Russell took the lead at 10 miles and never relinquished it until his engine halted him at 30. The two competitors continued to keep together until the 30th mile, when Antonelli went to the front and remained there. At the end of the 50th mile Antonelli was a clear lap ahead, and his margin was increased to three laps at 100 miles. At 150 miles Antonelli led by five laps, and at 200 miles by seven.
