by personal religious considerations, he being a Moslem and Faye a Catholic. Faye is a Catholic, and Sonko a Moslem; both are Senegalese. Faye and Sonko are Senegalese, and of different religions, but they have long been close personal friends. They have been associated politically since 1928, when the former, then plain M. Diomaye, became minister of public works in Sonko's cabinet. Both men were born in the same town of Bakel, and began life as school chums. Diomaye as a lad went to Paris, where he studied medicine, and in due course qualified as a doctor. He returned to practise in his native place, but soon moved to Dakar, the capital, where he became a successful medical man, and also built up a flourishing private practice. Sonko remained in Bakel, and adopted a commercial career. Both prospered, and in due course Sonko became mayor of his town, and Diomaye a municipal councillor of Dakar.
