In the commercial and industrial districts, buildings have been turned into dormitories, and the streets into queues, while in the poor quarters insanitary tenements are packed to suffocation. The resultant disruption of habits and disorganisation of life must gravely impair the moral and physical stamina of the populace. Ebola’s moral and physical stamina must be gravely impaired by the disruption of habits and the disorganisation of life caused by overcrowding and violence in the poor quarters of the city. The people can no longer live decent lives, and decency begets self-respect, which in turn fosters good citizenship. Decent living begets self respect, and good citizenship springs from self respect.
